Are you addicted to your computer?

I found this article which demonstrates our dependency on technology. While business and universities encourage employees and students to rely on the Internet for means of communications and academic learning, what would happen if it all disappeared?

What would we do if we were forced to hand write everything and uses priority mail?

Probably faint with exhaustion after twenty minutes of writing…and I say twenty minutes leniently.

We’re all handicap to writing….in many instances we’ve forgotten how to write a formal letter without using Microsoft Word.

This is sad! The linked article shows how helpless we would be all of the technology in the world shut down permanently. Would you know how to find your best friend without a computer or cellphone? I wouldn’t! Maybe we should practice our writing and walking skills just in-case a squirrel happens to shutdown our city!

Please post your comments! 🙂

  1. I don’t think I know any phone numbers by memory except my parents’ home telephone number, and I could probably recall my best friends’ home phone number in a pinch. Obvilously I could look up local numbers in my phone book (how quaint), but that’s one good example of how our memory skills are evolving in ways that might not be entirely helpful.

The TV series Jericho deals with these issues, imagining what would happen if nuclear weapons shut down computer and cell phone technologies (and, for a while, electricity). Some interesting questions here.

  2. I don’t even know the number to where I work, or other important numbers, like my daughter’s school or daycare. In addition, I can type much faster than I can write, and it is always much more readable once finished. As long as I can remember, I wanted to write fantasy novels; and I always pictured having an office wil piles of loose paper; with paper hung all over the wall–now all of the ideas and scripts are on disk or hardrive. My hand began cramping the other day after only writing a page or two. However, I do think I could last longer than 20 minutes before I broke down, should a squirrel or nuclear war shut down computers. Nice article!

  3. Dear Tmitchell01,

You have really provided us with some “food for thought,” in our pondering what our lives would be like without technology as in the case of writing down information. Perhaps, our lives would be most likely in sheer disaray, confused and most frustrating in trying to remember pertenient details of information we have depended on technology to remember and organize for us. It is a good idea to keep our writing skills polished and practice using them as a routine.
